Rentovate

How Rentovate works.

From a photo of your room to a plan you can follow step by step.

The five steps

  1. 1. Take one photo

Stand in the doorway, shoot straight on, lights on. Bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens for now.

The app's photo step with a rental bathroom photo ready to upload.
  2. 2. Pick what to change

Walls, floor, lighting, mirror and more. If something sticks to your walls, we ask a few quick questions about them, so we only suggest products that suit your surfaces.

The app asking what to change, with Walls ticked.
  3. 3. Pick a style

Heritage green, warm spa, walnut noir and more. Every style is made of real products you can buy.

The app's style picker, showing each style's real wallpaper, floor tile and vanity wrap.
  4. 4. See your redesign

Your room, redesigned, with your layout still in it. Ask for changes in plain words, like “warmer lighting”. The preview is free.

  5. 5. Get the digital kit

The products and how many to buy, the install steps in order, the move-out steps, and a landlord message if you need one. $19, one time. You buy the products from the retailers.

The app's kit: a real install step and the cart with each product's Removable label.

What's in a kit

A real kit, unblurred: the heritage green bathroom from the top of our home page. Amounts are for a sample room: a 5 × 8 ft rental bathroom with 14 ft of painted wall, 8 ft high, and a vanity with 2 doors and 3 drawers.

We earn a small commission when you buy through kit links. It doesn't change your price.

One install step, in full

Floor tile · FloorPops x Chris Loves Julia Bonneville Peel & Stick Floor Tiles, Jade (FP6332)

  1. Confirm the existing floor is smooth, flat and non-porous (sealed tile, sheet vinyl or sealed concrete); deep grout lines may telegraph through, so skim-fill or skip very textured tile.
  2. Deep-clean and degrease the floor, let it dry fully; optionally roll on FloorPops primer for better grip.
  3. Snap a center line and dry-lay a row to plan the checkerboard so cut tiles land at walls, not the doorway.
  4. Peel and place tiles from the center outward, pressing firmly; alternate the colored and white tiles for the checker pattern.
  5. Score and snap or cut edge tiles with a utility knife; make paper templates for the toilet base and vanity.
  6. Roll or press every tile hard (rolling pin or J-roller) and avoid mopping for 24-48 h.

Tools: tape measure, chalk line or pencil, utility knife, straightedge, J-roller or rolling pin, cleaner/degreaser, paper for templates.

Its move-out step

With care

Warm each tile with a hair dryer and lift from a corner; clean leftover adhesive with warm soapy water or an adhesive remover safe for the original floor.
